International Meeting of Carbonate Sedimentologists

Welcome

The 17th edition of the Bathurst Meeting (International Meeting of Carbonate Sedimentologists) will be hosted in Naples (Italy) on 5-7th September 2023.

The Bathurst Meeting is one of the most important sedimentological events assembling every 4 years with carbonate sedimentologists from all over the world. Robin Bathurst, a very influential scholar in early carbonate sedimentology, initiated informal meetings of carbonate researchers in Liverpool in 1959, which later became a tradition sustained by Universities in the UK. These informal meetings were characterized by deep and open discussions and stimulated the development of new ideas at the forefront of carbonate science.

Following the 16th edition, held in Mallorca in 2019, the next meeting will be held again in the Mediterranean area, in Naples, Italy. Robin Bathurst had in the 60s a very close friendly relationship with carbonate researchers from Naples University where he spent one sabbatical year. Naples is surrounded by extensive shallow-water Mesozoic and Cenozoic carbonate outcrops, often shaping spectacular scenarios such as the Capri Island, the Amalfi/Sorrento Peninsula, as well as the Gargano Promontory.

The meeting will be held in the heart of Naples historical town centre, a fascinating stratification of more than 2000 years of history at the crossroads of eastern and western Mediterranean civilizations, surrounded by some of the most memorable archaeological sites of the Greek-Roman history such as Paestum, Pompei and the Campi Flegrei.

This edition of the Bathurst Meeting will be the first of the Energy Transition time, and will be characterized by forum discussions on frontier topics of carbonate research such as H and CO2 storage, geothermal energy and the contribution of carbonate research to the understanding of Global Change. A wide choice of field trips all around southern Italy will be offered as well as a boat trip along the carbonate cliffs of Amalfi/Sorrento coast.

I warmly encourage you to join this event and book it in your schedule.
